Houses

Australian housing world's most expensive.

That's great, many Australian's can't afford to live here, that means only foreigners can afford to live here, which many Australian's don't want them to do...

A conundrum of the modern ages.

I know I can't afford to buy.

Good on you Howard. You managed to double the price of houses and people can't buy them without going into massive debt ... on ultra low interest rates .. which means ... if they go up ... then thousands of Ozzers are f*cked.

Hmm, I wonder if that was deliberate?

I also ponder whether it was all part of a big plan to dig a nice rut for us all to get stuck in, but it's an issue that was definately exploited for their political benefit.

Exploring the matter - what caused the housing boom? Was it the first home buyers grant? Was it the fact that it was for a limited time only, thus causing a rush to buy? Thus skyrocketing the prices? Why the hell didn't the reserve bank do something about this problem of debt whilst it could?

Howard may have been the major contributor to the problem in the first place, and then showed how it has an obvious benefit for him, but our government has far too little transparency for us to know anything about what appears on the drawing board.

The interest rates thing was indeed a master stroke.

'Yes we lied our arse off about kiddies being chucked in the water by their parents, BUT if interest rates go up by 1% adios McMansion pal...'

It was 75 all over again. Forget the fact the GG bowed to political terrorism and sacked labor, the economy is not good so vote 1 liberal. And that worked too.

On the other hand, why do people expect to be able to afford to buy?
Having such large numbers of people owning houses is a recent thing. 'Commoners' used to just rent a bed, not even a room.

But man... I'd love to own a house.

Sigh, me too. But we only just got out of debt (apart from family loans) for the first time in our lives. Right now the idea of renting until retirement then jamming super into a house is starting to look real attractive.

Interest rates will go up at some point. And thousands and thousands and thousands of Australians are going to know some real pain.

I don't imagine it's too much to ask for everyone to own the home they live in. When a roof over your head is considered a commercial product, especially when bought by corporate entities, that you are never entitled to treat as your own, plus the threat of getting kicked out onto the street, even if you’ve paid a fair percentage over several years from the house itself, etc, well, there’s something just a little bit sad about the whole situation.

It’s not a plasma TV, it’s shelter from the elements.

Still, there’s always squatting.
