Australia Day
It's Australia Day. A day for all Australian's to be entirely self-righteous. To collectively attach everything great within our borders, and claim it as fruits of our own personal labours.
Ultimately, there is no Australia. It's a vague concept. Countries, states, cities, suburbs, regions, roads, lots, they all exist for the sole purpose of navigation, with a few local law differences on the side.
A lot of Australian's understand this, and spend their Australia day doing the right thing - sleeping-in, relaxing, socializing, family time. They don't go around marvelling at how wonderful they are, vicariously noting how shit everyone else is. It would be called 'up yourself' day otherwise.
Where does Australia the concept stop? Is it somewhere in the ocean? A certain distance from the shore? Does it include New Zealand - or Nauru? Nauru surely - they use Australian dollars and the number one sport is Australian Rules football.
Is patriotism an allegiance to a border?
All this nonsense is dangerous, and can be easily abused.

Of all the days to celebrate Oz, this is the stupidist day. I man Jan 26 represents misery and disenfranchise for a sig chunk of our pop. Why can't we just make Jan 2 an extra day and celebrate federation or something. To be Jan 26 is nothing but a reminder to hose whose genetic heritage is 40k+ in Oz that they lost everything 200+ years ago.
morton its too hot to protest except indoors, in front of a fan. With a cold drink. You get so hot you lose your train of thought. This is an actual conversation I was party to yesterday:
"So, a handful of Norwegians wrote their constitution and got independence from Sweden?"
"Ja."
"You could liken that to federation in Australia."
(me) "I don't see how the acknowledgement that the port cities had fundamentally the same interests is anything like it."
"I am so ashamed to be Australian."
"This is really getting off the topic..."
"Look, you might be a nice guy, this is like a disclaimer, right? But I honestly think the USA is the most evil country in the world."
"OK, yeah, I guess we have great capacity for harm..."
"NO! I AM ASHAMED TO BE AUSTRALIAN AND THE USA IS EVIL!"
(me) "Does anyone want to see if its cooled down outside yet?"
Brains fry in the heat.
Amen to that. This year was a stinker. I had to change undies four times.
