GMOh?

I have no particular beef with GMOs. I'm sure they'll have some amazing benefits one day, something that makes patents on life worthwhile. One day. Apparently Victoria is set to lift it's moratorium on them.

That's concerning.

But what is NOT concerning is - people may not know. If we are not ALLOWED to know whether man has genetically altered a product before we consume it, that is not concerning.

It is an outrage.

If the public MIGHT be concerned about that aspect about a product (and they will be), they deserve to know. Like trans fats, like all the other warnings that deserve to be (or are already) on products.

I haven't read The Age's coverage on this, but if the moratorium is lifted without any labelling requirements, Labor are down 4 points - otherwise, only 1 point.

UPDATE: Read The Age's coverage, found nothing about labelling.

people must protest.
Monsanto's trials in the UK were unsuccessful because of public outcry, but maybe the UK public are more risk conscious/ environmentally careful because of BSE(?)

Apparently the state ALP is doing it due to federal Liberal pressure.

With both major parties behind it, protesting will be futile, but should proceed nonetheless.

You are completely correct Larry. It is crucial that adequate and clear labelling is used so that we may make an informed decision on what type of food we put in our bodies.

Its outrageous that this isn't occurring. Both parties ought to head their heads in shame.

People absolutely have the right to know what they're consuming.

Recently, I read about some tests in Europe (Germany I think) on some GM maize that coded for a toxin designed to kill a particular type of insect larvae. I forget if the company that owned the GM maize was Monsanto or Bayer, but they tried to have this research suppressed. The reason? When fed to rats they developed fatty liver (among other problems I can't remember). This particular maize is already used in food in the US, and the company took the researchers to court in Europe to prevent their study being published.

Any government that kowtows to these companies is simply being bought off- the companies have never had the interests of consumers at heart.

Monsanto got bought out because their stcok crashed due to backlash over GM.

When did their stock crash? I had a look, they've been pretty strong for some time now.
