Things I've figured out by myself.

The homophobic often make the claim that being gay is a choice, which seems rediculous to most straight or openly gay people, because we just simply look at the gender we do not preference and say: "nup, not doing anything for me. Them's the breaks."

It's not complicated, they just don't get the juices flowing. Willing but not able.

I had a thought though - the seemingly strange homophobe idea that its a choice may simply stem from the fact that it IS a choice - to them.

Not that it SEEMS like a choice, it IS a choice. They're gay, but they CHOOSE not to be. And they despise the fact all these cunningly attractive homosexuals, and they way they wiggle oh-so temptingly, taunt them away from their choice.

Why would you choose to be gay? It may be trendy in some way, but it's hardly convenient. Why would you choose to be straight? Ooh, where to begin. Persecution? Hatred? Fear? Shame?

Stop bashing gays or get out of the closet. That's your choice.

Faultless logic. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to ask various members of my family who try the 'gay is a lifestyle choice' line why on earth someone would choose to be gay when it means exposing themselves to open hatred and bigotry.

I certainly never sat down and thought about whether my primary sexual preference would be for males or females, and I find it a very odd idea that anyone could think that most people do have to 'choose' which way they'll swing.

exactly. you like who you like. There's no logic to it. For some people they like people with the same equipment. 10,000 electro shock sessions at Camp Jesus Saved Me is not going to change it.

Right on.

This is way off, but you have a retriever, right? (or a lab?)

Its such an amazing connection between the dog and its owner, I thought you might like it... sorry to be trivial

There are going to be instances where it is a choice - I'm sure there are folk that don't mind experimenting with all sorts of adventurous activities.

Sexual desire is a little bit complex - look at fetish's for goodness sakes.

But that doesn't mean it's ALWAYS a choice, which is the argument put forward. The claim is there is that every male desires females, every female desires males, people are born exactly the same everytime, and any variation on that is down to personal will.

Science can argue whether it's more genetic, more environmental, chemical, whatever. But to argue that it's a choice (or a 'defective behavioral condition') 100% of the time is ludicrous and ignorant.

Gays don't hurt others by being gay, and it's only immoral because the bigots get images of backdoor action in their mind's eye and dislike it.

Oh, and the doggie was cute. An amazing level of training must have been put into that. Mine are labs, retrievers are too shaggy for my liking.

Shaggy... like that cartoon...
Yeah labs are way good.

I have a friend who thinks she has a chocolate lab but its so obvious he is part rottie. He has a head like a bull. He's still beautiful though. Actually he tried to hump me once while I was stoned and couldn't fight my way off the sofa (it was one with cushions like quicksand). I got the blame though for 'leading him on'...

Speaking of sexuality, well said about sexual choice re scientific arguments and bigots. FYI The uniting church also published a pro-sexual choice book about 2 years ago now, to explain their acceptance of homosexuality to those who didn't get it. Heavy theological stuff. I never finished reading it (because it seems self-evident that churches should accept) but I believe the main point was that it is personal.
But I think I've ranted enough about Christianity this weekend.

Spot on ... I think that alot of people who are homophobic are probably attracted to the same sex themselves.
