All your laws are belong to US

The Australia United States Free Trade Agreement requires Australia to prohibit the use of devices and services to circumvent TPMs (Technological Protection Measures). Currently Australia does not prohibit the use of devices and services to circumvent TPMs but does prohibit activities in relation to circumvention devices.

Anyone found to have used technology to circumvent copy control TPMs will face fines of up to $6600, while those guilty of distributing enabling devices and services to others through a variety of means face imprisonment for up to five years and possible fines of $60,500.

Australia had an obligation to the US to implement the laws before January 1 next year.

Compulsory laws. In a democracy. Smells like freedom.

fwI can understand the reasons for America wanting it - cha-ching! Stupid Australians, we were gonna protect them anyways!

I can understand why Johnny and The Libs want it - screwing the little people and respect for democracy is not something any rational person would ever expect from them.

But.. Labor? Thanks Latho. See here of the opinions of unions before the FTA got ratified.

Now the unions can't say boo about it and still laud Beazley as their saviour.

Still, on the plus side, it hasn't been too dramatically crippling.

I have no idea where the "fw" at the start of that comment came from.

now when you buy something the seller will have rights to your property after the sale so long as it has 'tpm' in it. you buy an xbox, you don't own it. you buy and ipod, or whatever, you don't own it, even though you bought it. even opening up your toaster to see how it works could be made illegal if there's something proprietary inside, despite the fact you bought it and didn't enter into any contract.

basically the seller gets to decide what you do with what you buy, after you buy it. i run linux and have software on my machine that enables me to decrypt dvds so i can watch them on my computer, just like in windows. under the new laws i'd be committing a crime watching the dvds i paid for simply because i refuse to use windows to do it.

Yeah at work I was involved in a tender process. I wanted to restrict it to local companies only. But no, I had to make it internation so US companies could bid.

Hooray! FTA rules!
